Dhammañāṇa: Once totally caught by google, AI and machines, every door has been closed for long, long term.

2024 Mar 11 09:14:04
Dhammañāṇa: People at large just wait that another would do his/her duty. Once a slight door to run back, they are gone. By going again just for debts, the wheel of running away turns on.

Shrine & Devotements - Schrein & Widmungen (Anumodana)

first draft - please join for development

What is it good for? I thought Buddhists are above rituals and more easygoing? What is the benefit? What does Anumodana mean?

Anumodana lit. "according to taste", i.e. satisfaction, thanks, esp. after a meal or after receiving gifts = to say grace or benediction, blessing, thanksgiving

The act of Anumodana is meant as a sighn of gratitude (katanu). In many Asian countries such acts of gratitude while sharing incense stick at the entrance of a house or pagoda is mostly directed to ancestors but also to hungry ghosts and place spirits in order to introduce one self and pacify them. But actually pacifying could be also an expression which is forced by fear or blind believes and such kind of repaiment does not really count as devoted act in a wholesome sense even it might be nessesary.

Was bedeutet 'Anumodana'?

Anumodana lit.

*More details nessesary

Maybe important in addition: With 'Anumodana' one can give / give further blessings and wishes without the wish to gain something back or an expected reaction. It's a giving to outflow one's self and which is done.

For many of us it is a normal act to erect an altar or something similar in his/her house where one can think of, make thanks, dedicates and devotes or also take as a focus for meditation or simply take as a positive anchor.
This is where it reminds me of the aspect of consciousness which sometimes gets lost because one is bound to do a lot of things afterwards or simply has to go out of the house.
To light incense sticks and dedicate them is always an act of devotion, so ask yourself: do I still wear shoes, do I stand on something not appropriate, am I collected and how do I hold the incense sticks? It is of importance to have already lit a candle since in the act of devotion one should stand or sit collected, holding the incense sticks with both hands and taking care that he/she has a stable position in standing or sitting an only then light the incense sticks by the candle.
To light an incense stick with the pocket lighter ist not necessarily wrong, but your probably not collected when doing it without the right focus. A candle helps to get in a pensive situation and mood.
Another aspect are flowers to dedicate. All beings who are blessed with those are pleased about it. However, one can always ask before taking (in nature - since everything has an owner). You could also choose to pick up the fallen jasmine flower than to pluck a fresh flower and lay it on the altar; as well as pick up a wilting flower which someone had carelessly thrown away and thank her for her being is as collected and a conscious act as to lay on the altar.

Danke für das Teilen dieser Gedanken! Sadhu!

Quote from: Abhidhamma in der täglichen Praxis - Ashin Janakabhivamsa/Deutsche Übersetzung: Alfred Meier

Thanks for sharing this thought! Sadhu!

I remember some thoughts for "Abhidhamma in daily life " and thought they might be on topic:

How Good Results Differ According to Dana

Even if you offer alms to one, or two or more Bhikkhus, if you select them in personal terms the Dana becomes punggalika Dana (charity meant for individuals.) If you do so, even though you offer alms to a thousand Bhikkhus, you are only doing puggalika Dana. Except Dana specially offered to Buddha and Paccekabuddhas, Sanghika Dana excels all other forms of Dana. When we talk of Sanghika Dana, the Arahats are also included. In the case of punggalika Dana, Arahats may or may not be included. So we can safely deduce that Sanghika Dana amounts to offerings alms to the holiest Bhikkhus whereas punggalika Dana needs careful selection of the recipients Bhikkhu. It is quite logical to conclude that Sanghika Dana is much more powerful and much more beneficial than punggalika Dana.

Offerings of the Buddha

During the time of Gotama Buddha devotees were privileged to offer alms to the Buddha in person. But today the Buddha is no more with us in person. So we have to learn from the texts how to offer alms in devotion to the Buddha.

First you must prepare alms-food enough for one Bhikkhu and place in front of a statue of Buddha. If there happens to be no statue nearby, you can create a mental image of the Buddha and offer alms and reverence to that image. Then you must dedicate your cetana to the Buddha in person.

After such offering, the alms food may be given to a devotee who does voluntary service in keeping the pagoda precinct clean and tidy, whether he is lay person or Bhikkhu. A voluntary worker who keeps uposatha Síla (Eight Precepts) can eat the alms-food before doing any service if the noon is drawing near.

At the time of great ceremonious charity if one wishes to offer alms-food to the Sangha led by the Buddha, the same procedure should be adopted to make offering of alms-food to the Buddha.

In offering robes in devotion to the Buddha the same attitude should be maintained. Monks who give voluntary services to pagodas are entitles to attire themselves in such robes. Care should be taken that offering flowers, incense or joss sticks, bouquets and water at the pagoda should not become a mess in front of statues and images. Your Dana must be given with tidiness, you will get good results in this life and hereafter. Your future existences will also be clean and flawless.

How to Pay Homage from a Distance

Usually, most devotees pay homage and offer alms to the Buddha images in their own household because they cannot afford the time to visit pagodas and monasteries everyday. There have been arguments on whether this is a deed of merit or not. Since we have already learnt that the deciding factor is the cetana, we can be sure that great benefits will be realized. If your volition is projected onto the Buddha, it is decidedly kusala cetana, so there is no reason not to gain any merit.

On hundred and eighteen aeons, kappa (worlds) ago, the Atthadassi Buddha attained Enlightenment. One day a layman saw the Buddha and his Arahat disciples traveling through the air by supernormal power, he offered flowers and scents from a distance. Due to his single good deed he was never reborn in the four woeful states for thousand of years and became an Arahat in the time of our Gotama Buddha. He was then known as Desapujaka Thera.

(Personally I disagree with "Then you must dedicate your cetana to the Buddha in person." in this regard, as it could cause wrong view if one directs his thoughts upon something that does not exist. If it is in direction of somebody who existed, it might be good. If it's toward the qualities of a Buddha it might be also very good.)

A short introducing description of the use of Anumodana in the Tradtion from the chanting guide on ZzE:

Quote from: Intro Anumodana
Anumodana is a difficult word to translate into English. Literally, it means "rejoicing together," but it can also mean approval and encouragement. The tradition of Buddhist monks' giving anumodana to donors of food and other requisites goes back to the time of the Buddha. After a meal or when presented with a gift, he would often "instruct, urge, rouse, and encourage" the donor(s) with a talk on Dhamma. Many of the anumodana stanzas used today come straight from these talks. Reading them in translation, it is obvious that the stanzas are not mere blessings. They express approval for the donor's wisdom in being generous, explain the rewards of generosity, and give encouragement to continue being generous. Other stanzas, composed in later centuries, fall more into the category of blessings, wishing happiness and good fortune for the donor(s).

The stanzas collected and translated here are those that are most widely used in the Thai Theravada tradition at present. All are appropriate for general merit-making donations, although some are considered especially appropriate for special occasions as well. The common pattern when giving anumodana is to begin with Passage I, to end with Passage XIII, and to include one or two of the other passages in between.

Notes have been included to identify the source of the stanzas, if they come from the Pali canon, and to give other useful information on their meaning and use.

My hope is that this collection will be useful, not only for the monks and novices who must memorize and chant these stanzas, but also for lay donors who wish to know the meaning of the stanzas and who appreciate encouragement in their practice of the Buddha's teachings.

Warum due beiden Foren nich zusammen legen, warum getrennt?
