Pali Dictionaries for UDP
« Reply #1 on: February 18, 2013, 06:02:47 AM »
Anumodana!

I have created several Pali-English dictionaries from material found on the internet:
All of these electronic dictionaries are offered
FOR FREE DISTRIBUTION ONLY by arrangement with their respective publishers.
All of these dictionaries work with
The Unicode Document Processor
version 04.01.01 or later.

Download and Installation Instructions
  • Your first step is to download The Unicode Document Processor (UDP) and install it by running the downloaded file. This step is required to use any of the dictionaries below. Version 11.01.01 or later works best with Pali.

    Pali-English Dictionaries

  • The first dictionary is T. W. Rhys Davids's classic Pali-English Dictionary
(PED) with over 17,000 entries and much additional information for many
words. This dictionary has all the diacritical marks. This is published
by the Pali Text Society and can be found on-line at the University of Chicago's Pali-English Dictionary web site . Install the dictionary by running the program. The installer will place an icon on your desktop for easy access.
This step is optional if you do not want a very large dictionary will full diacriticals and extensive information. (Screenshot )

  • The second dictionary is the Mettanet-Lanka Pali-English Dictionary , a large 20,000 word Dictionary from the MettaNet-Lanka website.
This dictionary has all the diacritical marks. Install it by unzipping the file and placing it where you think is appropriate.
This step is optional if you do not want another large dictionary will full diacriticals.

  • The third is the classic Buddhist Dictionary by Nyanatiloka with over 1400 entries. This is published by the
Buddhist Publication Society and can be found on-line at
    http://www.saigon.com/~anson/ebud/bud-dict/dic_idx.htm .
Install it by unzipping the file and placing it where you put the other dictionary.
This step is optional if you do not want the classic dictionary with its extensive information.

  • The fourth is a small 200 word Glossary from the
Glossary of Pali and Buddhist terms
at Access to Insight . Install it by unzipping the file and placing it where you put the other dictionaries.
This step is optional if you do not want a small dictionary with no diacriticals. (Screenshot )

    English-Pali Dictionary

  • The last dictionary is an English to Pali dictionary based on the Concise English-Pali Dictionary by Venerable A.P. Buddhadatta Mahathera . This also comes from the MettaNet-Lanka website and contains over 28,000 entries. Install it by unzipping the file and placing it where you put the other dictionaries. This step is optional if you do not want an English to Pali dictionary.

    Further Instructions

  • UDP Version 11.01.01 or later works best with Pali. You should choose Options > Advanced > Ignore Case and also Keyboard > Ctrl+D Diacritical Keyboard > Pali Diacriticals Only in the menu to make working with Pali easier.

  • Install the dictionaries in UDP's dictionary list by doing the following:
    • Start UDP [Click Start / Programs / Tibetan / UDP ]
    • Click the Tools menu item
    • Click the External UDP Dictionaries... menu item
    • Click one of the 3 bottom Browse buttons
and navigate your way to where you installed UDP (PaliEngDct.ude is located there)
    • Click the  PaliEngDct.ude file and click Open
    • Click another of the 3 bottom Browse buttons
    • Click the  palieng.dbp file and click Open
    • Click another of the 3 bottom Browse buttons
    • Click one other dictionary file and click Open
    • Click one of the radio button to determine which dictionary will be chosen.
    • Finally, Click OK

  • If the Pali doesn't display properly, you'll need a font with diacriticals. Here are some suggestions:
    • If you have Microsoft Office installed, the Arial Unicode MS font that comes with that package is all you'll really need.
    • CSX+ and Tibetan Modern A Fonts - install AFTER installing UDP!
    • Gentium
    • Code2000
More information on fonts can be found here (scroll down for general Unicode fonts)
    After installing your font(s), click
Options > Fonts in UDP and select the font(s) in the Unicode fonts section.

To Look Up a Word in one of the Dictionaries
If you encounter a Pali word you wish to lookup in a file you have open in UDP (such as in the
Sutta Database ), double click that word, then
click the Tools and Lookup Marked Text Externally menu items.
A new copy of UDP will be run against either the PaliEngDct.ude
or palieng.dbp or bpsdict.dbp dictionary, depending on which you have selected in the
Tools/External UDP Dictionaries dialog box
and the closest word will be found. Since not all possible words are in the
dictionary, the word found may not be the word you highlighted - check carefully!

For additional information about using dictionaries with UDP, including
chaining multiple dictionaries together, see the Help topic
Tools - Lookup Marked Text Externally after pressing F1 in UDP.

All these dictionaries can function stand-alone (running in UDP,
but not being called from UDP). Simply type the word you wish to lookup
into the Key Field (the narrow field in the middle of the UDP window).
The closest match will be found as you type each letter.

A word about this version of the Glossary
I want to thank John Bullit for his very wonderful
Access to Insight
website and for permission to convert his
Glossary
to this Database.
This dictionary uses simplified Pali spelling with almost no diacritical
characters - which works well on the web and among casual readers of
Theravadin texts.

A word about this version of the Pali-English Dictionary
I want to thank Bhikkhu Mettavihari, the patron of MettaNet Foundation,
for his very excellent
MettaNet-Lanka
website and for permission to convert the
Pali English Dictionary
to this Database. Since a scholar wants all the diacritical marks in
the Pali words, this larger dictionary should serve very well.

A word about this version of the Nyanatiloka's Buddhist Dictionary
I want to thank the Buddhist Publication Society for its permission to
publish this electronic edition of this wonderful, classic work.
This electronic edition of the Buddhist Dictionary --
Manual of Buddhist Terms and Doctrines -- by Nyanatiloka Mahathera is
offered FOR FREE DISTRIBUTION ONLY by arrangement with the publisher, the
Buddhist Publication Society .
This text is a Gift of Dhamma. You may print this file for your personal use,
and you may make and distribute unaltered copies of this file, provided that
you charge no fees of any kind for its distribution. Otherwise, all rights reserved.

Das "Manual of Buddhist Terms and Doctrines -- by Nyanatiloka Mahathera" gibt es übrigens auch in deutsch: "Buddhistisches Wörterbuch", Verlag Beyerlein und Steinschulte
Im Internet:
http://palikanon.com/wtb/wtb_idx.html

Quote from: Johann via email today
Valued Upasaka Leigh,

Attma tries to replay within the previous email like Upasaka did.

Metta & Mudita

Samanera Johann

Quote from:  Mr. Leigh Brasington via email today

Dear Samanera Johann,

Quote from: Johann
> longer time ago Attma, used to shared links to your generous work in regard of pali dictionary on sangham.net, a small forum with mainly translation works like zugangzueinsicht.org and other Dhammadana and punna work, dedicated for the Sangha and at least a small virtual Vihara to be.

Quote
Glad you found my work useful.

** Much mudita with you deed. Sacrify and giving make a did useful for one self. Letting others paticipate on ones own skillful deeds open the possibility to share the merits. May Upasaka allow Samanera increase your joy with a short stanza as Dhamma gift:

When a house is on fire,
the vessel salvaged
is the one that will be of use,
not the one left there to burn.
So when the world is on fire
with aging & death,

one should salvage [one's wealth] by giving:
what's given is well salvaged.

Whoever here is restrained
in body, speech, & awareness;
who makes merit while he's alive:
that will be for his bliss after death.

http://zugangzureinsicht.org/html/tipitaka/an/an03/an03.052.than_en.html

[qoute]> The last time Attma investigated a little more about building up an online dictionary which should be open to grow and found your references again.
> First of all, and pardon Attma for approaching you uninvited, Attma would like to ask valued Upasaka, if his works would be shareable, of course non-commercial

Quote
Yes, most certainly.  All my Pali dictionary work is from other people
sharing their work, so of course it is shareable.

** Sadhu!

Quote
> and further more, not only that Attma would like to invite valued Upasika to join generally this small layman project to make internet more easy accessible for monastics while be able to stick better by Vinaya, but also if valued Upasaka would have interest in developing such an working tool dictionary within sangham.net s given possibilities.

Quote
It sounds like a very nice and important project.  But I'm currently
fully booked with all my teaching engagements.  So I simply don't have time to add any additional project.  Sorry.

** No problem. And no, its not an importand project, but a good foundation to make good deed, for which you gave some good additional basement. The thought was more, that if you still work on such, it would have been a joy to share and give the maybe needed enviroment. It was not thought as making an additional burden. Much joy with you teaching. Less deeds give more good possibilities to grow on all sides for a better. Mudita.

Quote
> Once again, Attma would like to beg for pardon that he disturbed you and please don't mind anything out of this sudden email.

Quote
No problem at all.  I'm very glad you have written.  Feel free to write
again if you have further questions.

** Thanks and Sadhu for you gift of invitation.

Quote
> How ever, and totally independent of all other thing, Attma heartily invites you to join, participate and make use of the environment and possibilities on sangham.net as well on accesstoinsight.eu.

Quote
I wish I could clone myself - I could keep a half dozen copies of me
busy with interesting work!

** Lesser is mostly more. Just be sure that Upasaka is always welcome and invited.
Attma allows himself to share you gift and your merits further.

Quote
> Best wishes from Cambodia

Quote
And best wishes to Cambodia from me!

** Upasaka just arose the thought, that there is actually no khmer pali dictionary. Maybe those are not just wishes what you sended. Who knows the whole amout and power of good deeds. May Upasaka let Attma leave Upasaka with a heartily smile.

Quote
Much Metta,
Leigh

Sadhu and mudita.

If anybody feels inspired to start to work on developing an multilingal pali dictionary, which could be done as an open undertaking for everybody, something like glossword in an joomla enviroment (maybe Upasaka Dmytro can even help to build up the starting database and enviroment), please feel invited and dont hesitat if you like to use the given enviroment here.

Btw. Attma is not able to download html files. If anybody feels inspired, it would be how ever nice to share the html and or the pdf versions and other tool in our upload section (library).

Attma will try to upload the pdfs. (html could be attached)
