2024 Mar 11 09:14:04

Individual Introduction - Persönliche Vorstellung / Abhivādana - Forum Guide

first draft - please join for development

This forum is meant to introduce your self to the community. Of course it’s up to you to decide to do this.
While in “modern” world greeting and informing others is merely a rare or lukewarm custom, it actually is a very important part for the personal practice put also for the health and security of the community.
Today its mostly normal for us to come and go, without telling others what we are going to do, but it’s a matter of care for each others to inform them, so that everybody is able to look after others and are able to support and help if someone is in problems. Such general functions of society are nearly degenerated in modern society and exchanged with anonymous social structure. They might give some feelings of independency and maybe they are the reason for the degenerating of old traditional usual we actually find in all cultures, but at least its always your neighbor or your friend who are able to help you out and we know that social structures of today have already reached their limits. To use this ways of respect, devotion and care for others will actually give us real independency, an independency for or usual desire of wanting to be somebody special, better or higher as others and independency for our fear to be misunderstood, undervalued and prejudged by others.

An idea to use this forum would be that every forum member, so he/she likes, makes his own topic with his member name where he/she introduce him/herself but also keep the group update of important issues.

If you do not wish to tell much about you, a short “Hi!” in the “The long "short Hello!" topic ” is also very welcome.

The personal introductions, if more than just "hello" will be move to the subforum (Further introduction - Genauer Vorstellung) later on and are not visible for Not-Members.

Additional some short explaining about Abhivādana, its usage and its benefits:

-------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------

Individual Introduction (Abhivādana)

What is that good for, I thought Buddhists are above rituals and more easygoing? What is the benefit?

It's importand that one does not mix equanimity with apathetically or haughtiness. Of course people at a higher stage of practice will take not much value on such rituals if they allready have less amount of concite. As for those still hardly ensnared with wrong selfbelieves it's therefore a good training to cut of a little step by step. As for one who stands above already, it would be no problem to follow the usual behavior of those who starters and people in training.
If some ascetics of high attainments would meet, they would not great and ask about there names, but they are used to work and live alone and to mentally maintain respect and goodwill in regard of all other beings around is there permanent state.
There will be no blame and no negative effect if you act according to your present attainments and against tricky hindrances. You will benefit form it by fighting your moods and others will benefit from you, as you give a good sample of one who respects others and trains well. Give it a try if you are not used to and keep up doing it even others tend to do not.

Abhivādana is translated as "respectful greeting, salutation, giving welcome, showing respect or devotion" and falls under the ten general meritorious deeds as apacayana.

abhivādana : [nt.] salutation; bowing down.

Description:

abhi-vādana n. respectful salutation (including sometimes the name or title of the person so addressed and followed by the mention of the person's own name)
• salutation (of a superior or elder by a junior or inferior, and especially of a teacher by his disciple
• in generaI it is merely lifting the joined hands to the forehead and saying aham abhivādaye, I salute)

Reverence (apacayana) is a part of the Dhamma which should not be neglected for it helps in the overcoming of conceit. Buddhists of all traditions have shrines with images, paintings, stupas and so on, just because reverence is an essential part of Buddhist training. From practices based on reverence are born humility in oneself and harmonious relationships with others and the Buddha tells us that four qualities increase for those who are respectful and honor those who are senior to them: "Long life and beauty, happiness and strength" (Dhp 109). Who does not want them?
 take from "Daily practice "

Patisanthara:  Hospitality
Amisapatisanthara: Material Hospitality
Dhammapatisanthara: Dhamma Hospitality

An. Duka 20/116

Explanation:

Patisanthara means to properly welcome guests to your home. Amisapatisanthara means to welcome guests with material things such as food and warm water. Dhammapatisantara disagrees with showing hospitality with material offerings: a guest must be welcomed suitably by bowing properly to show proper respect to the status of the guest, e.g. either by standing up or prostrating oneself. To greet a high status person as if they were a commoner sets a bad example, despite the good will of the host. Thus Dhammapatisantara means hospitality suitable to the status of the guest.

Patisanthara:  Gastfreundschaft
Amisapatisanthara: Materielle Gastfreundschaft
Dhammapatisanthara: Dhamma Gastfreundschaft

An. Duka 20/116

« Reply #3 on: June 18, 2014, 02:14:18 PM »

Mag man dies hier entschuldigen.
