Welcome to the English version of Kanlayanatam.com, a website dedicated to promoting the teaching of the Buddha without the barrier of language.
Founded in Thailand, Kanlayanatam is a charitable not-for-profit organization, run by a like-minded group of dedicated people with the objective of promoting Buddhism.
Over the past years, Kanlayanatam has been producing a number of Dhamma books as well as holding quarterly Dhamma events. It is one of the key touch-points where Dhamma e-books, audio books, dhamma discussion MP3’s and dhamma discussion videos are available for download freely.
We have noticed an increasing demand for Buddhist related content in the English language and believe this is an excellent opportunity to extend the Buddha’s teaching to a wider group through this website.
Presently, several portions of the Thai version of Kanlayanatam.com have been translated into English. The Dhamma Q&A section allows everyone to have their questions answered by the very respected Dr.Sanong Vora-Urai.
About us The first time that Dr. Sanong Vora-Urai was interested in practising meditation was when he was in high school. It was brought up during conversations among his brothers and sisters. Then he practiced himself when he had the chance.
In 1962, after he received his Bachelor Degree in Plant Pathology from Kasetsart University, Thailand, he worked as an agricultural academic. He was then transferred from the Department of Rice, Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operatives to be a professor at the Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University, Thailand. He was the first group of professors in the university, and later he established the Graduated Institution for further education on Master and Doctoral degrees.
In 1971, he received his Master degree in Mycology from Kasetsart University and was also awarded a Colombo scholarship for his Doctoral degree in virology from London University, England. During those 4 years of his study, he spent his free time meditating for mindful inner peace everyday.
In March 1975, he came back to Thailand after graduating. At that time, it was the summer break; therefore, he had free time before the university started it's next semester. He decided to ordain to prove ‘the truth of the Lord Buddha’s Teachings’ at Paritnayok temple. Then movingto Wat Mahathat to practice “Vipassana Kammathana” (Meditation leading to “insight”, which in turn leads to “intuitive wisdom”, the power to eliminate all kinds of suffering*) with Phra Thepsittihimuni (or Chaokhun Chodok), a meditation master at Wat Mahathat (Section 5), Thailand.
During those 30 days, he followed the teachings of his meditation master dedicatedly and devoted his practice to paying homage to the Lord Buddha. He gained mind powers and penetrated into the Lord Buddha’s teachings of the “Truth” with self-enlightenment. He also experienced several psychic phenomena, events that were beyond the scope of human bodily sensory perception, and which science could not confirm, but he did realize them through his “insight” and “intuitive wisdom”. Within 10 days after he started the meditation, he was able to separate the mind and the body.
Because of the intuitive wisdom he gained from the mental development, after he left the monk-hood, his life changed remarkably in all ways – thoughts, words and actions.
Since his retirement as a lecturer at Chiang Mai University, he has dedicated himself to spreading the Lord Buddha’s teachings by planting a seed of “Absolute Truth” in the minds of laymen and monks with the good intention of directing their lives to not fall into the four states of miseryby way of the animal kingdom, hungry ghosts, demons, or hell beings.
Kanlayanatam Club was established with a group of people who want to help him spreadBuddhist Teachings. He has written many books telling the stories of his practical experiences, as well as the essence of Buddhism through Vipassana Meditation practice. These are also availableon CD's and MP3. Dr. Sanong Vora-Urai paved the way to the ultimate path of self-enlightenment and invites all of us to follow.
Kanlayanatam is supported by the venerable Dr. Sanong Vora-Urai, a Ph.D(Lon), whose excellence in both Science and Buddhism are highly regarded. Vora-Urai practiced Mindfulness Meditation (Vipassana) at Wat Mahathart, Bangkok and was a university lecturer at Chiangmai University, Thailand in northern Thailand.
After his retirement, he has dedicated himself to spreading Lord Buddha’s teachings by planting a seed of “Absolute Truth” in the minds of laymen and monks. Vora-Urai has published a number of ้Buddhism-related books in Thailand, some of which are also available in English.
The working group, who produce the Kanlayanatam website(English version), would like to express gratitude to Dr.Sanong Vora-Urai, who enlightens us.
Thanks also to Khun Achara ( the president of Kanlayanatam) and Khun Charlermpan (Thai Webmaster), for helping us create this English version.
