3. Candūpamasuttaṃ

146. Sāvatthiyaṃ viharati…pe… ‘‘candūpamā, bhikkhave, kulāni upasaṅkamatha – apakasseva kāyaṃ, apakassa cittaṃ, niccanavakā kulesu appagabbhā appagabbā (ka.). Seyyathāpi , bhikkhave, puriso jarudapānaṃ vā olokeyya pabbatavisamaṃ vā nadīviduggaṃ vā – apakasseva kāyaṃ, apakassa cittaṃ; evameva kho, bhikkhave, candūpamā kulāni upasaṅkamatha – apakasseva kāyaṃ, apakassa cittaṃ, niccanavakā kulesu appagabbhā’’.

‘‘Kassapo, bhikkhave, candūpamo kulāni upasaṅkamati – apakasseva kāyaṃ, apakassa cittaṃ, niccanavako kulesu appagabbho. Taṃ kiṃ maññatha, bhikkhave, kathaṃrūpo bhikkhu arahati kulāni upasaṅkamitu’’nti? ‘‘Bhagavaṃmūlakā no, bhante, dhammā bhagavaṃnettikā bhagavaṃpaṭisaraṇā. Sādhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaṃyeva paṭibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvā bhikkhū dhāressantī’’ti.

Atha kho bhagavā ākāse pāṇiṃ cālesi. ‘‘Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ayaṃ ākāse pāṇi na sajjati na gayhati na bajjhati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, yassa kassaci bhikkhuno kulāni upasaṅkamato kulesu cittaṃ na sajjati na gayhati na bajjhati – ‘labhantu lābhakāmā, puññakāmā karontu puññānī’ti; yathāsakena lābhena attamano hoti sumano, evaṃ paresaṃ lābhena attamano hoti sumano; evarūpo kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu arahati kulāni upasaṅkamituṃ.

‘‘Kassapassa, bhikkhave, kulāni upasaṅkamato kulesu cittaṃ na sajjati na gayhati na bajjhati – ‘labhantu lābhakāmā, puññakāmā karontu puññānī’ti; yathāsakena lābhena attamano hoti sumano; evaṃ paresaṃ lābhena attamano hoti sumano.

‘‘Taṃ kiṃ maññatha, bhikkhave, kathaṃrūpassa bhikkhuno aparisuddhā dhammadesanā hoti, kathaṃrūpassa bhikkhuno parisuddhā dhammadesanā hotī’’ti? ‘‘Bhagavaṃmūlakā no, bhante, dhammā bhagavaṃnettikā bhagavaṃpaṭisaraṇā. Sādhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaṃyeva paṭibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho . Bhagavato sutvā bhikkhū dhāressantī’’ti. ‘‘Tena hi, bhikkhave, suṇātha, sādhukaṃ manasi karotha; bhāsissāmī’’ti. ‘‘Evaṃ, bhante’’ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ. Bhagavā etadavoca –

‘‘Yo hi koci, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṃcitto paresaṃ dhammaṃ deseti – ‘aho vata me dhammaṃ suṇeyyuṃ, sutvā ca pana dhammaṃ pasīdeyyuṃ, pasannā ca me pasannākāraṃ kareyyu’nti; evarūpassa kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno aparisuddhā dhammadesanā hoti.

‘‘Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṃcitto paresaṃ dhammaṃ deseti – ‘svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiṭṭhiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṃ veditabbo viññūhīti viññūhi (?). Aho, vata me dhammaṃ suṇeyyuṃ, sutvā ca pana dhammaṃ ājāneyyuṃ, ājānitvā ca pana tathattāya paṭipajjeyyu’nti. Iti dhammasudhammataṃ paṭicca paresaṃ dhammaṃ deseti, kāruññaṃ paṭicca anuddayaṃ anudayaṃ (bahūsu) dvittakāraṇaṃ pana gavesitabbaṃ paṭicca anukampaṃ upādāya paresaṃ dhammaṃ deseti. Evarūpassa kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno parisuddhā dhammadesanā hoti.

‘‘Kassapo, bhikkhave, evaṃcitto paresaṃ dhammaṃ deseti – ‘svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiṭṭhiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṃ veditabbo viññūhīti. Aho, vata me dhammaṃ suṇeyyuṃ, sutvā ca pana dhammaṃ ājāneyyuṃ, ājānitvā ca pana tathattāya paṭipajjeyyu’nti. Iti dhammasudhammataṃ paṭicca paresaṃ dhammaṃ deseti, kāruññaṃ paṭicca anuddayaṃ paṭicca anukampaṃ upādāya paresaṃ dhammaṃ deseti. Kassapena vā hi vo, bhikkhave, ovadissāmi yo vā panassa kassapasadiso, ovaditehi ca pana vo tathattāya paṭipajjitabba’’nti. Tatiyaṃ.

Candūpama Sutta: Comparable to the Moon

Thus I heard. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery of Anāthapiṇḍikassa, in Jeta's grove in Sāvatthi. There the Blessed One addressed the Bhikkhus:

"Bhikkhus, approach families comparable to the moon: good retired with body and mind, ever retentive like a newcomer families unobtrusive.

"Like a man looking down at a decayed well, an escarp, or a steep riverbank, would retire his body and mind, so too, Bhikkhus, should you always compareable to the moon, good retired with body and mind, approach families, retentive like a newcomer families unobtrusive.

"Kassapa, Bhikkhus, approches families compareable to the moon: good retired with body and mind, ever retentive like a newcomer families unobtrusive.

"Now what do you think, Bhikkhus, a Bhikkhu of what kind is ready to approach families?"

"Venerable Sir, the techings are rooted in the Blessed One, leaded by the Blessed One, having the Blessed One as protector. It would be good if the Blessed One would make the meaning delightful clear. Learned by the Blessed One, the Bhikkhus will bear it in mind."

Then the Blessed One waved the hand in the air: "Just as, Bhikkhus, this hand is not hold, not seized, not imprisoned in the air, even so, Bhikkhus, a families approaching Bhikkhus mind, whatever, does not get hold, seized, nor imprisoned admidst families: 'Let those, being selfish and given to gain, be selfish and given to gain, let those, being given to merits, do merits', and what ever he gains he is pleased and joyful, so as with what others gain he is pleased and joyful, like this, Bhikkhus, a Bhikkhu ready to approach families.

"Kassapa, Bhikkhus, approaches families with a mind that does not get hold, seized, nor imprisoned admidst families (,thinking:) 'Let those, being selfish and given to gain, be selfish and given to gain, let those, being given to merits, do merits', and what ever he gains he is pleased and joyful, so as with what others gain he is pleased and joyful.

"What do you think, Bhikkhus, what kind of Bhikkhu is giving teaching on Dhamma impurely, and what kind of Bhikkhu is giving teaching on Dhamma purely?"

"Venerable Sir, the techings are rooted in the Blessed One, leaded by the Blessed One, having the Blessed One as protector. It would be good if the Blessed One would make the meaning delightful clear. Learned by the Blessed One, the Bhikkhus will bear it in mind."

"Then, Bhikkhus, listen and pay close attention, I will speak."

"Yes, venerable Sir," the Bhikkhus replayed to the Blessed One. The Blessed One spoke thus:

"There is the case, Bhikkhus, that a Bhikkhu teaches the Dhamma, thinking: 'Oh, may they listen to the Dhamma from me. Having learned my Dhamma, may they be settled in believe in it. Having been settled in believe in it, may they show their settlement in believe," this is a kind of Bhikkhu, Bhikkhus, who is giving teaching on Dhamma impurely.

There is the case, Bhikkhus, that a Bhikkhu teaches the Dhamma, thinking: 'The Dhamma of the Blessed One is well taught, direct visible, timeless, inviting to come and see, appropriate, to be self-experianced by the wise. Oh, may they listen to the Dhamma from me. Having learned the Dhamma, may they understand. Having understood the Dhamma, may they practice accordingly.' So he teaches the Dhamma because of the excellence nature of the Dhamma; he teaches the Dhamma out of compassion and kindness, out of pity. This is a kind of Bhikkhu, Bhikkhus, who is giving teaching on Dhamma purely.

Kassapa, Bhikkhus, teaches the Dhamma, thinking: 'The Dhamma of the Blessed One is well taught, direct visible, timeless, inviting to come and see, appropriate, to be self-experianced by the wise. Oh, may they listen to the Dhamma from me. Having learned the Dhamma, may they understand. Having understood the Dhamma, may they practice accordingly.' He teaches the Dhamma because of the excellence nature of the Dhamma; he teaches the Dhamma out of compassion and kindness, out of pity.

Bhikkhus, I advice you by the sample of Kassapa, or one who is similar to Kassapa's kind. Being adviced, you should practice in this way.

Dies habe ich gehört: Zu einer Zeit lebte der Erhabene im Kloster von Anāthapiṇḍikassa, in Jetas Hain bei Sāvatthi. Dort richte sich der Erhabene an die Bhikkhus:

"Bhikkhu, wartet Familien, dem Mond gleich, auf: gut entfernt Körper und Geist, stets zurückgehalten wie ein Neuankömmling Familien, unaufdringlich.

"Wie ein Mann einen verkommenden Brunnen hinunter blickend, einen Steilhang, oder eine steiles Flußufer, seinen Körper und Geist zurüchhalten würde, ebenso, Bhikkhus, solltet Ihr stets gleich dem Mond, gut entfernt Körper und Geist, Familien aufwarten, zurückgehalten, wie ein Neuankömmling Familien, unaufdringlich.

"Kassapa, Bhikkhus, wartet Familien, gleich dem Mond auf: gut entfernt Körper und Geist, stets zurückhaltend wie ein Neuankömmling Familien, unaufdringlich.

"Nun, was denkt Ihr, Bhikkhus, ein Bhikkhu welcher Art ist bereit Familien aufzuwarten?"

"Ehrwürdiger Herr, die Lehren wurzeln im Erhabenen, sind geführt vom Erhabenen, haben den Erhabenen als Beschützer. Es wäre gut wenn der Erhabene die Bedeutung erhebend offenbaren würde. Gelernt vom Befreiten, werden die Bhikkhus dieses im Geist behalten."

Dann schwenkte der Erhabene die Hand in der Luft: "Gerade so, Bhikkhus, wie diese Hand nicht gehalten, nicht ergriffen, nicht gefangen in der Luft ist, eben so, Bhikkhus, gerät eines familienaufwartenden Bhikkhus Geist, wie auch immer, nicht gehalten, ergriffen, oder eingesperrt in Mitten von Familien: 'Laß jene, selbstsüchtig, dem Gewinn ergeben, selbstsüchtig und dem Gewinn ergeben sein; laß jene, dem tun von Verdiensten hingegeben, Verdienste tun', und was immer er bekommg, ist er erfreut und zufrieden, so auch mit dem was andere erlangen er erfreut und zufrieden ist. Wie dises, Bhikkhus, ist ein Bhikkhu bereit Familien aufzuwarten.

"Kassapa, Bhikkhus, warter Familien mit einem Geist auf, der nicht festgehalten, ergriffen, noch eingesperrt, in mitten von Familien, wird (denkend): 'Laß jene, selbstsüchtig, dem Gewinn ergeben, selbstsüchtig und dem Gewinn ergeben sein; laß jene, dem tun von Verdiensten hingegeben, Verdienste tun', und was immer er bekommg, ist er erfreut und zufrieden, so auch mit dem was andere erlangen er erfreut und zufrieden ist.

"Was denkt Ihr, Bhikkhus, welche Art von Bhikkhu gibt eine Lehre über Dhamma unrein, und welche Art von Bhikkhu gibt eine Lehre über Dhamma rein?"

"Ehrwürdiger Herr, die Lehren wurzeln im Erhabenen, sind geführt vom Erhabenen, haben den Erhabenen als Beschützer. Es wäre gut wenn der Erhabene die Bedeutung erhebend offenbaren würde. Gelernt vom Befreiten, werden die Bhikkhus dieses im Geist behalten."

"Dann, Bhikkhus, hört zu und gebt gut acht, ich werde sprechen."

"Ja, Ehrwürdiger Herr", erwiderten die Bhikkhus dem Erhabenen. Der Erhabene sprach dies:

"Da ist der Fall, Bhikkhus, daß ein Bhikkhu das Dhamma lehrt, denkend: 'Oh, mögen sie dem Dhamma von mir lauschen. Mein Dhamma gelernt, mögen sie sich in Vertrauen darin ergeben. Sich in Vertrauwn darin ergeben, mögen sie ihre Ergebenheit zeigen', dieses ist eine Art von Bhikkhu, Bhikkhus, der eine Lehre über Dhamma unrein gibt.

"Da ist der Fall, Bhikkhus, daß ein Bhikkhu das Dhamma lehrt, denkend: 'Das Dhamma des Erhabenen ist gut dargelegt vom Erhabenen, direkt erkennbar, zeitlos, einladend zu kommen und zu sehen, schlüssig, selbsterkennbar durch Weise. Oh, mögen sie dem Dhamma von mir lauschen. Das Dhamma gelernt habend, mögen sie es verstehen. Das Dhamma verstanden habend, mögen sie entsprechend ausüben' Er lehrt das Dhamma aufgrund desen unübertreffbarer Eigenschaft; er lehrt das Dhamma aus Mitgefühl und Güte, aus Mitempfinden. Diese Art von Bhikkhu, Bhikkhus, ist einer der Lehre über Dhamma rein gibt.

"Kassapa, Bhikkhus, lehrt das Dhamma, denkend: 'Das Dhamma des Erhabenen ist gut dargelegt vom Erhabenen, direkt erkennbar, zeitlos, einladend zu kommen und zu sehen, schlüssig, selbsterkennbar durch Weise. "Bhikkhus, ich halte Euch mit dem Beispiel von Kassapa, oder einem gleich Kassapas Art, an. Dazu angehalten solltet Ihr in dieser Weise ausüben."
