Dein Tempel, dein Palast und deine Grenzen - Your Temple, palace and borders

übersetzt aus „The Beginning of the Beginning“ von Osho

Your Temple, your palace and your borders

There is the story of a king who once built a special palace. He made it so impregnable that no enemy could enter it. We also, in life, make just such castles and take all precautions to keep the enemy away and be absolutely safe. What does man do all his life, after all? Why does he amass wealth? Why does he yearn for position and fame? So that he may feel safe and secure and life holds no terror for him. But the fun of the whole thing, and also the secret, is that the more measures he takes to safeguard himself, his fear increases in the same proportion. The king had also conquered all there was to conquer. No the only fear was to guard himself from the enemy; for the enemy conquered is still the enemy.

He who tries to conquer others, makes enemies of all. Only he who is ready to accept defeat from another man alone be a friend in this world. The king wished to conquer the whole world so the whole world was his enemy and his fear had increased a thousandfold. When fear increased, it became necessary to make provisions for safety. He built a big palace with only one door. There were no other doors and no windows; not even a hole for the enemy to work through. Only one door - guarded by thousands of soldiers with naked swords.

The neighbouring kind came to see this much-talked-of palace. He was terribly impressed and determined to make a similar palace for his own safety. While taking leave, he praised the king for his foresight and wisdom and reiterated his desire to follow his example. An old beggar sitting by the roadside heard this talk. He laughed aloud. The owner of the palace chided him saying: "What makes you laugh, fool?"

"Since you ask, Sire, I shall take the opportunity of telling you," said the beggar. "There is only one flaw in this marvellous structure. It is impregnable except for the door. The enemy can come through the door. If you step in and have the door covered with brick and mortar, it will be completely secure.

Then no enemy can ever enter it."

"If I do as you say, you fool, this palace will become my grave," said the king.

"It already is," said the fakir, "except for the door. Through this door the enemy can come, and if not the enemy, death is bound to come."

"But I will be dead before that!" raved the king.

"Then understand this well." said the fakir. "As many doors as you had in your palace, so much of existence was with you. As you decreased the doors so also life diminished within you. Now one door is left - one lone opening to life; close it and shut out life forever. Therefore I say, there is only one flaw." And he broke into peals of laughter again. "I too had castles, your majesty,"the fakir continued. "Then I felt that they were no more than prison-houses. So I began to widen the doors and separate the walls. But I found that no matter how much I widened the doors the walls still remained, so I got out of the walls and came out in the open. Now I stay beneath the open skies and am alive in the perfect sense of the word."

But have we not all built as many walls around us as we possibly could? The walls that are made of brick and mortar are not that dangerous, for they can be seen. There are other walls - subtle, imperceptible walls.... These are the hard screens - glass screens of concepts, of doctrines, of scriptures. Absolutely invisible!
These walls we have built around our souls [mind] for complete security The thicker the walls, the farther it keeps us away from the open skies of Truth. Then the soul [mind] becomes restless and struggles; and the more agitated the soul [mind] is, the more we strive to strengthen the walls. Then a fear grips us - perhaps this struggle, this restlessness, is due to the walls? The answer is "Yes." As long as the soul [mind] is confined, it cannot attain bliss. There is no sorrow except in captivity.

Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammā-sambuddhassa

Seid schnell darin,
Bewundernswertes zu tun.
Verschließt euren Geist dem Schlechten.

Wenn ihr langsam darin seid,

erfreut Schlechtes den Geist.

DIE WELT VERHÜLLT DAS DHAMMA - THE WORLD HIDES THE DHAMMA
« Reply #17 on: November 22, 2013, 08:36:34 PM »

THE WORLD HIDES THE DHAMMA

You have seen so many deaths in your life. Why do you not contemplate the death of others and refer it to your own impending death, so that your mind can gain a sense of the awesomeness of death? We enjoy bodily pleasures because we do not think about our own death. From now on use sammati to think about death in order to decrease defilements and craving. This is the technique of using sammati to eradicate sammati.

We are used to letting sankhárá fabricate our thinking about form and sound until the mind is full of passion and desire. From now on change your thinking. See it from the other side. Think against the stream. You have thought about beauty that fills your mind with passion and desire. From now on you will think about the foulness of the body, the suffering of the body and mind. Think about the impermanence of everything. Think about anattá, the lack of self. Nothing really belongs to you, not your property or even your body. Let the mind realize this not-selfness. Soon it will depart. You depend on it only while you are alive. This is the technique of thinking in the Dhamma way to counteract sankhárá. Use thinking to counteract thinking. Those who want to get away from this world must know it in all aspects so as to make the mind awed and weary of being born, as stated in the Pali:

"Natthi loke raho nama" meaning "There are no secrets in the world". Use wisdom to unmask completely the secrets of the world.

This is to suggest a way to practice samatha (concentration) and vipassana (insight) using the words of conventional truth to talk about or to teach Dhamma practice in the right way, so that those who follow the teaching will not misunderstand. Do not be like a blind man leading the blind. There is some hope of success if those with good eyes lead the blind, but at any rate if you do not make it to the goal, make sure at least that you do not let the blind lead you back to where you came from. Many people still misunderstand Dhamma practice. They think that wisdom arises from calmness of the mind in samádhi. If it were true, why is it that the non-Buddhist hermits never attained wisdom?

Anumodana!

Man (ge/befangen) sieht ja nur was man sehen will.

Sehr wichtig, sehr richtig!

From Dhamma in Cambodia

Quote
Nipat: We should not forget that we are only beginning to study. People who really study are the enlightened ones who are "learners" (sekha puggala), who are classified as seven, beginning with the person who has attained the Path-consciousness of the "Streamwinner", the sotāpanna, up to the Path-consciousness of the arahatta. The person who has attained the fruition-consciousness, phala-citta, of the arahat is a non-learner, asekha. Therefore, we should not be downhearted about our study, because we only just begin to study. However, we should be firmly convinced of the truth that there are realities appearing through six doors, the doors of the eyes, the ears, the nose, the tongue, the body and the mind-door.

From The Tree of Wisdom By Nargarjuna

Quote
Association with the evil man is unbecoming. Whether he be pleasant or obnoxious. As with a dog--it is unbecoming whether you play with him or let him lick you.

Wildness is worse than a serpent. A serpent's venom can be assuaged by drugs and spells wildness is not to be assuaged by anything.

The sins of the unruly (the undisciplined) leave their mark on the temperament. Whosoever mixes with the unruly becomes even more unruly than they.

Even without noticing his father's conduct the son imitates him. From the kitaka tree one does not get the kurura fruit.

If my father, mother, own brother and wife imitate me in whatever sin I commit, it is as if I had committed it.

This earth, the mighty ocean and the mountains are not a burden, but he who is ungrateful is indeed a heavy burden.

He who stays in the society of those of good moral behavior rejoices to benefit all evil spirits elementals. Although Yama is the destroyer, yet wise men praise him very much.

In the society of the clever, the disciplined, the contented, and the truthful, imprisonment is a superior state. The sovereignty of the unruly is not thus.

Intimacy in the society of the holy, conversation in the society of the learned, and the friendship of the unselfish, these will cause no regrets.

Although for a very long time you may not perceive the misery caused by sin in this world and the other world, yet bring your mind into harmony with religion.

Although a thing may afford you mental enjoyment, yet, if the full fruition is to be injurious, how can it be right? If anything upsets your health how could it be right to eat such a sweet dish?

That which hurts but is profitable is drunk by the wise like medicine. The result, attained afterwards, becomes in itself incomparable.

If a learned king summarizes the meaning of this book in the beginning, the middle and the end, it will be found to be not otherwise than stated.

When the ocean shall be no more it may be crossed in the middle, so they say. Whether holy men exist or not we should not transgress the moral codes.

Now when a man is truly wise,
His constant task will surely be
This recollection of his prior giving
Blessed with such mighty potency!

Nun wenn ein Mann wirklich weise ist,
Wäre seine stete Aufgabe sicherlich
Das Rückerinnern an seine frühere Großzügigkeit
Gesegnet mit solch einer gewaltigen Willenskraft!

In diesem Garten gilt als oberstes Gesetz:
Was lebt und atmet sollst Du gütig schützen!
Drum schon auch das Insekt
und pflück' die Blume nicht,
die Dich erfreut;
auch deinem Heil wird's nützen!"

In this Garden rules as highest order:
What ever lives and breaths you should protect!
So preserve as well the vermin
and do not pluck the flower,
giving you such joy;
it will serve your welfare as well.

DIE HÖCHSTE GABE

Dank an Georg Grimm

Der Schatz, den Du dem Menschen gibst,
ist niemals abzuwägen.
Der eine sieht in ihm ein Nichts,
der andre Heil und Segen.

Nur wessen Geist dem Deinen gleicht,
vermag Dich zu verstehen.
Dein Finger, der zur Sonne weist,
lässt ihn die Sonne sehen.

Doch wem Dein Wort nur Schale bleibt,
bleibt an der Schale kleben;
er sieht den Finger und sonst nichts:
Kein eigenes Erleben.

Kein Widerstreit für den, der sieht
im Wort verborg'nes Schauen:
Es strahlt ihm zu die Wirklichkeit
in hellem Morgengrauen.

Maggots

When we give rise to right view in our hearts, we can be at ease wherever we are. It's because we still have wrong views, still hold onto ideas that are poisonous, that we're not at ease. Holding on in this way is like being a maggot. Where it lives is filthy; its food is filthy. Its food isn't fit to be food — but it seems fitting to the maggot. Try taking a stick and flicking it out of the excrement where it's feeding, and see what happens. It'll wiggle and wriggle, eager to get back to the pile of excrement where it was before. Only then does it feel right.

It's the same with you monks and novices. You still have wrong views. Teachers come and advise you on how to have right view, but it doesn't feel right to you. You keep running back to your pile of excrement. Right view doesn't feel right because you're used to your old pile of excrement. As long as the maggot doesn't see the filth in where it's living, it can't escape. It's the same with us. As long as we don't see the drawbacks of those things, we can't escape from them. They make it difficult to practice.

For one who likes to stay a worlding, there is no deliverance.
One who seeks for deliverance, does not stay a worldling.

"Ist die Sache schwer verständlich,
Sagen sie: 'Der Sinn ist klar'.
Wo der Sinn vollkommen klar ist,
Machen sie ein breit Geschwätz.
Durch sinnlose Wortgeflechte
Und durch vielen Redeschwall
Da, wo er nicht angebracht ist,
Stiften sie Verwirrung nur
Bei dem Hörer und verdunkeln
Nur die Sache. So verfahren
Die Kommentatoren alle!"

"If the matter might be difficult to understand,
they say: "The meaning is quite clearly'.
Whereas the meaning is total clear,
they are doing broadly tattle.
By pointless word battles
and huge flood of words
where ever it is not placed proper,
they cause confusion for the listener
and becloud the matter. That's how they do
the commentators. All of them!"

Quote from: Abhidhamma in Daily Life, by Ashin Janakanbhivamsa
Love! Love! The more they love, the more they are in-satiated, just as they cannot quench their thirst by drinking salty water. Love, pema, tanha turns a blind eye to one's defects; expecting happiness through love, one nurtures love. This is the way of love, the nature of love. " ~ An Ancient Poem

Quote
"Liebe! Liebe!
Desto mehr sie lieben,
desto mehr sie unerfüllt,
gleich wie sie ihren Durst
nicht mit dem Trinken von Salzwasser bezwingen.

Liebe, pema*, tanha**,
wendet ein blindes Auge
an die eigenen Mängel,
Glück in Liebe zu erwarten,
man die Liebe nährt.

Das ist der Liebe Gangart,
der Liebes Eigenschaft"

~ Ein alters (burmesisches/südostasiatisches) Gedicht

*pema (Liebe, Zuneigung, Befallenheit, Erkrankung)
** tanha (Begierde, Durst, Sehnsucht, Verlangen, Sucht)

As the Buddha said, the beginning of wisdom is when you go to people who've found true happiness and you ask them:
"What should I do that will lead to my long-term welfare and happiness?"
Notice that: My. Long-term. Welfare and happiness.
Those three categories are directly related to the three perceptions.
The "my" is related to not-self; "long-term" is related to inconstancy; "welfare-and-happiness" is related to stress.
The three perceptions act as ways of testing any happiness you find, to see if it measures up to the standards you've set. But they follow on the "what-should-I-do." That has to come first."
From: Three Perceptions by Thanissaro Bhikkhu

Quote
