Preface

This edition of one thousand copies has been published by Māha-Makuta-Raja-Vidyālaya King Mahā Makuta's Academy for the benefit of people who are interested in the way of training of those who have left their homes to lead the homeless life. It is hoped that this, work which is complementary to the Pali and English Pāṭimtokkha published here will be found useful in two ways.

The first concerns Buddhist lay people who should know how a bhikkhu (monk) or sāmaṇera (novice) should train himself so that they may be of help to him in this respect. Since in Buddhist tradition, the life of bhikkhu and Sāmaṇera are not secluded from lay-people but rather they form two halves of the whole, so lay-people who have the welfare at heart of those gone forth also take interest in how the latter should train themselves. Moreover lay-people often take the precepts of the bhikkhu or Sāmaṇera upon themselves for a limited period of training so that this hook, many times printed in Thai, may help Buddhist lay-people in other countries who do know the Thai language.

The second point concerns one who aspires to become a Sāmaṇera. He should be fully aware of his own way of training and just which precepts he should observe. With this awareness and the help of his Teacher, he can train himself with diligence.

As ever increasing numbers of people become interested in the practice of Lord Buddha's Teachings, so whether as forthgone or lay practicers, it becomes increasingly necessary to make available genuine Buddhist literature that they may be well-informed regarding their respective duties in the Buddhist way of Training.

This translation, originally produced as a booklet (without the Biography of Venerable Rāhula), by Mahāmakuta Educational Council on the occasion of the cremation of the remains of His Holiness the late Saṅgharāja, Phra Ariyavaṁsagatañāna, has in this edition been both revised and enlarged.

Vorwort

Samaneras chanting the Steps of Training

Namo tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammātsambuddhassa.

A Brief Biography of Venerable Rāhula, the first Sāmaṇera.

Details of the life of Rāhula, prince of the Sakiyan people, son of Prince Siddhattha Gotama, heir to the Sakiyan throne and grandson of the reigning monarch Suddhodana, are mostly lost to us through the passing of centuries and even his noble character and great attainments have not ensured their preservation. Whatever can be discovered has to be sought from a great number of books since in common with the other Great Disciples, Rahula's life was not recorded in the Buddha-time nor even immediately after. The first attempts at collecting information were made with the compilation of the Atthakathā (Discourses on Meaning=Commentaries) translated by Ācariya Buddhaghosa out of ancient Sinhalese into the canonical Magadhi (or Pāli) about one thousand years after the Parinibbāna of Lord Buddha. Other sources of reliable information are the very scattered references to him in the Vinaya and Sutta Piṭakas where only isolated incidents are recorded. We may expect some more information on the Great Disciples from material preserved in Tibetan and Chinese although it will require sifting carefully as the later tales found about these disciples are much distorted and of little value. In this account notice is taken of a variant story found in the ancient Sanskrit Mahāvastu of Rāhula's first meeting with Lord Buddha (though it conflicts in many details with the Pāli).

In presenting this humble introduction to the Sāmaṇerasikkhā compiled by the late Saṅgharajā, His Highness Prince Jinavarasirivaḍḍhana, the writer wishes to point out that any excellence here is derived from the many authorities quoted by him, while faults and omissions are due to his inadequate learning.

Quote from: Pages 2-4
From the marriage of Prince Siddhattha with Bimbādevi (Yasodharā) was born a single child, a son whose name Rahulā (=fetter) was given in an unusual way. We are told that the news of Bimbā's safe delivery of a baby boy was taken to the Prince and Bodhisatta when he was returning from a drive through the city of Kapilavatthu after a day spent in a nearby park. When he heard the news, he is said to have declared, "Rāhulojāto bandhanaṃ Jātaṃ" (a fetter has been born, a bondage has been born), simultaneously deciding to renounce the life of sense-pleasures for the homeless wanderer's existence.

That very night after a brief farewell glance at his wife and son whose face was hidden from him, he departed from the palace upon Kanthaka, his white horse, accompanied by his faithful attendant Channa. Father and son were not to meet for seven years after that day which saw both Rāhula's birth and the Going-forth of Prince Siddhattha.

Within the year following the Enlightenment of Lord Buddha, he returned to teach the Sakiyan. The Māhavagga of the Vinaya tells us: "Then the Lord having stayed for as long as he thought fit, set out on tour for Kapilavatthu. In this way he arrived in due course at Kapilavatthu (after about two months). The Lord stayed there among the Sakiyans in the Nigrodhārāma. Then the Lord having robed himself in the morning, taking his bowl and (upper) robe, approached the residence of the Sakiyan Suddhodana (his father).[1] Having gone there, He sat down on the seat made ready. Then the princess, Rāhula's mother said to the boy Rāhula: "This is your father, Rāhula. Go and ask him for your inheritance."[2]

In elaboration of this the Commentary on the Dhammapada relates: "On the seventh day (after Lord Buddha had entered Kapilavatthu) Rāhula's mother adorned Prince Rahula saying, before sending him to the Exalted One, "Go and look upon this Sāmaṇa... possessed of beautiful form like Māha Brahma. This Sāmaṇa is your father and to him once belonged great stores of treasure. From the time of his Great Renunciation we have not seen him so ask him for this, your inheritance, saying, 'Dear father, I am a royal prince and as soon as I receive the ceremonial sprinkling, I shall become a Wheel-turning (universal) Emperor. I have need of wealth, bestow wealth upon me: for to a son belongs the wealth which formerly belonged to his father.'"

1.) According to the Mahāvastu the residence was that of Mahāpajāpati Gotami, foster-mother and aunt to Prince Siddhattha.
2.) The Mahāvastu has a long and dramatic tale of how the Sakiyans had made an agreement that whoever should tell Rāhula of that Gotama was his father, should forfeit his life. As a result, Yasodharā has been depicted as trying to avoid telling him but finally yielding to Rāhula's constant entreaties.

Quote from: page 4
"Then the boy Rāhula approached the Lord; having approached him, he stood in front of the Lord and said: 'Pleasant is your shadow, 0 Samaṇa."[1] This terse account in the Vinaya is expanded as follows in the Dhammapada Commentary: "Accordingly Prince Rāhula went to the Exalted One. The moment that he saw Him, he conceived a warm affection for his father and his heart rejoiced within him[2]. And he said, '0 Samaṇa, pleasant is your shadow' and much else befitting his own station."

The brief Vinaya Pāli then says: "Then the Lord rose from his seat and went away. Then the boy Rāhula following close behind the Lord said: 'Give me my inheritance, Samaṇa; give me my inheritance, Samaṇa."

1.) The Mahāvastu account has: "Then the shadow of the Exalted One happened to fall on Rāhula. And all on the hair on Rāhula's body bristled, all his limbs perspired, and his whole frame thrilled. Sitting in the Exalted One's shadow, Rāhula regarded him with a steady gaze."
2.) In the Mahāvastu, similar sentiments of affection are expressed by Rāhula: "Mother can this Samaṇa be in any relation of mine? For never has anyone affected me as this Samaṇa has. It seems to me that he has taken possession of my whole heart. It cannot be without some cause that at the mere sight of this Samaṇa such love is arbitrated to me as is aroused by the sight of no other Sakiyan.

Quote from: page 5
The Commentary expands somewhat: "When the Exalted One had finished his meal, he pronounced the words of thanksgiving, arose from his seat and departed. Prince Rāhula followed in the footsteps of the Exalted One, saying ..."(as above).[1]" The Exalted One did not repel the prince; even the attendants were unable to prevent the Prince from accompanying the Exalted One.[2] In this manner the Prince accompanied the Exalted One to the Grove (Nigrodhārama).

The Vinaya says shortly: "Then the Lord addressed the Venerable Sāriputta saying: 'Well then, do you, Sāriputta, let the boy Rāhula go forth' "— while the Dhammapada Commentary is more informative: "Then the thought occurred to the Exalted One, "The paternal inheritance which, this youth seeks inevitably brings destruction in its train. Behold, I will bestow upon him the Sevenfold Noble Inheritance [3] which I received at the foot of the Bodhi Tree: I will make him master of an inheritance which transcends the world."

1.) Mahāvastu: Then when Rāhula heard from his mother that this was his father, he clung to a corner of the Exalted One's robe and said: 'Mother, if he is my father, I will go forth from home to the homeless state and follow the way of my father." Notice Rāhula reacting out to grasp the robe in the cover-design.
2.) But Mahāvastu relates that Rāhula was advised by Lord Buddha to wait at home for seven days: "Then the Exalted One said to Rāhula, 'Go back, Rāhula, and do as your grandfather bids you'. So Rāhula let go of the corner of the robe of the Exalted One." 3.) This comprises the following: saddhā (trust), sīla (virtue), hiri (shame) ottappa (fear of blame), bāhusacca (complete truthfulness), cāga (generosity), and pañña (wisdom).

3.) Dies beinhaltet folgendes: saddhā (Vertrauen), sīla (Tugend), hiri (Scham) ottappa (Angst vor Tadel), bāhusacca (völlige Aufrichtigkeit), cāga (Großzügigkeit) und pañña (Weisheit).

Quote from: page 6
"Well then, Sāriputta, do you let the boy Rāhula go forth." At this injunction from the Teacher, the Venerable Sāriputta enquired, "How, Lord, do I let the boy Rahula go forth?" [1] The Vinaya continues: "Then the Lord on that occasion in this connection, having given a religious discourse, addressed the bhikkhus, saying: '0 bhikkhus, I allow the going forth for Sāmaṇeras by three times going for refuge.

1.) The Mahāvastu has much to relate: "Then the Exalted One spoke to the Venerable Sāriputta saying, 'Let Rāhula go forth and let him share your hut with you.' The elder asked the Exalted One, 'How Lord, shall I ordain him?' The Exalted One replied, '0 Sāriputta, with the going-forth of one who is a young man into the Aryan Dhamma and Discipline. He is to say, 'I, Rāhula, am going for refuge to the Buddha, for refuge to the Dhamma, and for refuge to the Saṅgha! Secondly, he is to say, 'I am Rāhula. The Buddha and none other is my refuge. The Dhamma and none other is my refuge. The Saṅgha and none other is my refuge. As long as I live, I, Rāhula, will refrain from destroying life, taking what is not given, wrong conduct in sexual desires, from false speech and from distilled and fermented intoxicants causing heedlessness. Establish me as a lay devotee on the basis of these five moral precepts. I, Rāhula, will follow into the chaste life the Exalted One who has gone forth to that life. A second time ... a third time ... I, Rāhula, as long as I live will observe the Sāmaṇera's rules of restraint from destroying life, (and so on as far as) restraint from accepting gold and silver. These are the ten rules of restraint.' Then the elder (Sāriputta) cut Rāhula's hair and let him go forth. Sāriputta took him by his right hand and Maudgalylyāyana (Moggallāna) by the left and led him to his bed of straw."
