As just having seen that Bhante Aggacitta wrote a book on refuge after having been clear about the different of perfection (an defiled construct for an "firm on householder") and the required "living perception", Saddhindriya, Saddha/Saddhā is the near cause for being able to bow down, give up, so that it could effect fruits and path.

And what is the cause of pasāda? (Dukkha) Saṁvega, is the cause of going for refuge, and with it the whole path develops (Dhammajāta, Jhāna).

It worthy for assistance, to read the generous gift of Respect, Confidence and Patient , especially for those coming from a modern, marxist, post-modern background of Buddhism (Vipassana-movement and "dry" Suttanta).

* Johann : Somehow householder think that Monks fall from heaven and do not know. It's only real leaving house when doing quick and it's no problem to leave thing behind. Remember Ven. Yasa or even Ven. Maha Kassapa (did theu check out to further control their left behind and where to go, take another house?). If planing it's just going after another house and may Nyom be sure that the Buddha had no thought of later delight in wandering on. That's not for sure, especially today, if really having given up relaying on being citizen or part of common society. Sure there is the kind of travel from one resort to another. "saddhamma who resort to remote lodgings and devote themselves to the higher mind in accordance with the Buddha's instructions cannot be found on the internet", sure? Of course not outside punna kiriya vatthu (in trade spheres). Sometimes some find remote areas, given areas, where such can dwell.

Bhante's advise about seizing this wonderful opportunity to be raised up from the low life is most welcome. May Bhante not underestimate the time it takes to untangle from the household life.

Bhante is quite correct that saddhamma is quickly disappearing as predicted by the Buddha. Proponents of saddhamma who resort to remote lodgings and devote themselves to the higher mind in accordance with the Buddha's instructions cannot be found on the internet, thus my travel plans to fulfill condition #1. There is also the potential for experiencing the benefits of periodic wanderings as described by the Buddha.

Sadhu Nyom saddhamma

Atma thought like ever to inspire to focus reflextion on own, inwardly, aspects of what it takes to really bow down.

As it is a matter, this bowing down, like the leaving home and stand: may Nyom don't waste his time. It's already November and althought it takes actually just very short time, even to physical bow down, leave stand, most will never ever bow down, never face the Dhamma with proper attention and wandering on from home to home, taking defiled perceptions as refuge, their khandhas.

Go on good householder, don't wast time in travel around and where Saddhamma can not be found.

May he, if he wishes to share his merits of having found refuge, later then return and do so.

Dear Bhante,
Thank you for the question. Since Bhante may have his own interpretations and ideas of the terms used in Bhante's question based on traditions, may Bhante allow me to caste the terms in the perspective of the suttas so that there is no ambiguity about how the Buddha defines them. If I take "bowing down" to be Bhante's translation of payirupāsati, and "make Noble Ones" as experiencing the four noble truths (Saccānubodha - at least a sotapanna), then the Buddha gives the answer to Bhante's question in the Canki sutta (MN 95) as requiring the following conditions:
  • Investigating the bodily and verbal behavior of the person with respect to greed, hatred and delusion and investigating the dhamma the person teaches to see if it is the well-proclaimed dhamma of the Buddha (saddhamma), which is deep (gambhīro), difficult to see (duddaso), difficult to know (duranubodho), peaceful (santo), excellent (paṇīto), beyond the scope of logical-reasoning (atakkāvacaro), subtle (nipuṇo), directly experienced by the wise (paṇḍitavedanīyo).
  • Placing faith in the person whose bodily and verbal behavior are free from greed, hatred and delusion and who teaches the well-proclaimed dhamma of the Buddha (saddhamma).
  • Approaching/frequenting such a person
  • Paying respects (bowing down)
  • Lending ear to listen to the saddhamma
  • Hearing the saddhamma
  • Memorizing the saddhamma as you have heard it
  • Examining the meaning of the saddhamma as you have heard and memorized it [not according to traditional interpretations]
  • Gaining reflective acceptance of the teachings
  • Arousing desire
  • Bracing your self for the needed endurance
  • Assessing the effort needed [attainment of Nibbana is not for the slack. It is not something that takes little strength as advised by Venerable Mahamoggallana]
  • Striving
  • Resolutely striving to realise with the body the supreme truth and see it by penetrating it with the dhamma eye (dhammacakkhu) of wisdom

On the subject of proper "bowing down" in honor of the Buddha, Dhamma and Ariya Sangha, the Buddha makes it very clear in the Mahāparinibbāna sutta (DN 16) that it is only those bhikkhus or bhikkhunis or upasakas or upasikas who dwell practicing the Dhamma in accordance with the Dhamma, having entered upon the proper path, living in line with the Dhamma— honor, respect, revere, venerate, and esteem the Buddha [the Dhamma and the Ariya Sangha] with the highest honor.

What does valued Guest, or anybody else think? Would that statement hold and if, under which conditions?

What kind of bowing down, giving up, by thoughts, speech and body is capable to make Noble Ones?
