The terms Anagārika and Anagarikā does not appeared in the Pali canon - Tipitaka, laity Upasaka and Upasika has accepted 8 precepts only on Uposatha days. So those terms appeared only in Atthakatha and later Pali literature. Originally Upasaka accepted 8 precepts only in Uposatha days, and if they wanted go further they became Samaneras, and finally Bhikkhus.
Bhante Khemindas , while it seems to be right, that such as Anagārika is merely a not so old Sri Lankan invention, actually not seeming to had tradition at Buddhas times, it's not good and not correct to say that first laypeople undertook the Uposatha only on specific days and also that there have been no laypeople undertaking 10 precepts. Such is good and possible for householders in certain circumstances. Also living homeless while not taking on the robe given by a monk is possible after having received the precepts after taking refuge.
In regard of Bhantes statement "just on siladays" the Buddha said: "You have taken it Ill-gotten if just sometimes (http://forum.sangham.net/index.php/topic,7977.msg11996.html#msg11996)", so it's not good to say such, even in public, seemingly without doubt.
