"Well then, Sāriputta, do you let the boy Rāhula go forth." At this injunction from the Teacher, the Venerable Sāriputta enquired, "How, Lord, do I let the boy Rahula go forth?" [1] The Vinaya continues: "Then the Lord on that occasion in this connection, having given a religious discourse, addressed the bhikkhus, saying: '0 bhikkhus, I allow the going forth for Sāmaṇeras by three times going for refuge.
1.) The Mahāvastu has much to relate: "Then the Exalted One spoke to the Venerable Sāriputta saying, 'Let Rāhula go forth and let him share your hut with you.' The elder asked the Exalted One, 'How Lord, shall I ordain him?' The Exalted One replied, '0 Sāriputta, with the going-forth of one who is a young man into the Aryan Dhamma and Discipline. He is to say, 'I, Rāhula, am going for refuge to the Buddha, for refuge to the Dhamma, and for refuge to the Saṅgha! Secondly, he is to say, 'I am Rāhula. The Buddha and none other is my refuge. The Dhamma and none other is my refuge. The Saṅgha and none other is my refuge. As long as I live, I, Rāhula, will refrain from destroying life, taking what is not given, wrong conduct in sexual desires, from false speech and from distilled and fermented intoxicants causing heedlessness. Establish me as a lay devotee on the basis of these five moral precepts. I, Rāhula, will follow into the chaste life the Exalted One who has gone forth to that life. A second time ... a third time ... I, Rāhula, as long as I live will observe the Sāmaṇera's rules of restraint from destroying life, (and so on as far as) restraint from accepting gold and silver. These are the ten rules of restraint.' Then the elder (Sāriputta) cut Rāhula's hair and let him go forth. Sāriputta took him by his right hand and Maudgalylyāyana (Moggallāna) by the left and led him to his bed of straw."
