« on: May 18, 2017, 09:15:20 PM »Hello, my name is Nick
I've been studying Pali Canon Buddhism for almost three years. Two years ago I did a 4 month retreat as a temporarily ordained samanera. Awakening to the reality of modern monastic life was a struggle, at the time i was quite smitten, however now I see how naive I was.
Well I'm 27 now and decided I want to go for refuge, completely, and undertake the going forth. I've kept in contact with the monks at the monastery over the years since my retreat and they said I'm more than welcome.
So I've saved up money to pay off the last of my debt and put in my notice of resignation with work yesterday, (resignation effective 12/31/2016). And will be moving into the monastery early January.
Thai Forest Tradition. Dhammayut sect.
Plan is to stay there for two years, adjusting and learning Thai, then do a 3 year stint in Thailand, I don't have to, my teacher tells me, but he says I should, one because it'd be honoring my lineage, and two because he says the jungle training, going on pindapat everyday, etc.. is a life changing experience. I hope to be able to do Thudong/Dhutanga during this time. I am not interested in being a city monk or living in a city temple. I'm not interested in being a scholar or teacher (primarily), but a proficient meditator, meditation seems to be neglected in monastic life, but so what, I dont have to pay attention to that, I dont have to look at the faults of others, just my own, anymore than I have to look to the merits of others, just my own.
I sincerely want to commit to the eightfold path as earnestly as I possibly can. Anyway...
That will total up to 5 years, then, and not a moments sooner, I will re-evaluate what I'm doing. I don't see myself giving up, I feel that my conviction in the Buddhas enlightenment is iron clad. Instead I have an idea after my 5 years "apprenticeship/probation" maybe I can go on pilgrimage to the places of the buddhas birth, enlightenment, 1st sermon, and parinibbana.
After that maybe return to the states.
Sadhu and mudita!
