(Mv.I.56.1) [120] Now at that time the thought occurred to the novices, “How many training rules do we have? What should we train in line with?”

They reported the matter to the Blessed One.

“Monks, I allow ten training rules for the novices. The novices are to train in line with them:

“Refraining from killing living beings.

“Refraining from taking what is not given.

“Refraining from uncelibate conduct.

“Refraining from false speech.

“Refraining from alcohol and fermented liquors that cause heedlessness.

“Refraining from eating at the wrong time.

“Refraining from dancing, singing, music, and going to see entertainments.

“Refraining from wearing garlands, using perfumes, and beautifying the body with cosmetics.

“Refraining from using high or large beds.

“Refraining from accepting gold and silver [money].

“Monks, I allow these ten training rules for the novices. The novices are to train in line with them.
