(Mv.IX.6.1) [199] Then Ven. Upāli went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side. As he was sitting there, he said to the Blessed One, “A Saṅgha that, in unity, not face-to-face, does a transaction that should be done face-to-face: Is that a Dhamma transaction, lord, a Vinaya transaction?”

“It is a non-Dhamma transaction, Upāli, a non-Vinaya transaction.”
